Theatre 12 class

My Theatre and English 12 teacher was such a spectacular influence on me. I loved how she taught. She solidified my decision to go into Education. I admired her passion for teaching and wanted to be just like her. She helped me forsee my dream job of becoming a high school theatre and English teacher. She was always so supportive of my goals. She gave me the opportunity to peer tutor her English 10 class and wrote an astounding reference letter for my university application.

When I was in high school, I tried to gain as many leadership opportunities as possible to see how much I enjoyed being in a position of authority and teaching others. I took on the role of a youth leader in an after-school program during grades 11, 12 and the proceeding year. I planned fun activities for all of us. I often led a co-ed group ranging from 10-20 youth. This was very challenging for me as I was the same age as many of them, and it was hard to gain respect and attention, but I be-friended them, and that seemed to work well for me. I always tried to plan activities that could be outdoors, required physical activity and a learning aspect. I loved leading this group of people; they taught me so much about leading youth.

My grade 12, I decided to enroll in the Kamloops Ambassador Society, also known as Miss Kamloops. I struggled with public speaking; this played a prominent role in my hesitation in wanting to pursue teaching. I was terrified of speaking in front of crowds and people my age. I wanted to challenge myself and become better at public speaking, so I joined the Kamloops Ambassador Society. I knew this program would help me in my future endeavours by helping me gain confidence in front of groups, public speaking, networking and overall knowledge. This program was very challenging for me, but I am grateful I participated. I was crowned Kamloops Miss Congeniality, voted by the other candidates. I learned so much about myself, public speaking, Kamloops, how to be a good citizen and what it takes to be a leader.

My love for children is the utmost reason I want to become a teacher. Children are full of creativity and surprises. They are such a joy to be around. I find it difficult to be anything but happy when children are present. I had the honour of teaching my oldest nephew how to read. We spent well over 100 hours studying the alphabet and phonetic words. It was challenging getting him to focus and not just play, but it was so rewarding when he finally understood. These children inspired me to pursue teaching because of how much fun it can be. I want a career that I enjoy, and I know this will bring me happiness. Children are so unique and deserve a proper education and a passionate educator; I aspire to do this.

Me enjoying education

Once I committed to furthering my education, I enrolled in post-secondary to work towards my Bachelor of Arts degree. I was determined to get 90 credits and then apply to the BEd; however, I explored many different concentrations in the arts and found a passion for sociology. I learned so much about myself, community, world, diversity, ethics, equality, and equity. I loved all of the knowledge at my fingertips. I began exploring sciences and kinesiology but quickly discovered that wasn’t for me. I applied to the education program and got accepted. I am grateful for my past experiences and opportunities that led me to become a teacher candidate.

This Ted Talk resonates with me and my educational journal because I agree with him. I believe many students do have a(n) :

1. lack of initiative

2. lack of perseverance

3. lack of retention

4. aversion to world problems and

5. eagerness for formula.

This Ted Talk speaks about how math needs a makeover. Dan reminds me of my high school math teacher, who helped make me not be afraid of math. He made me want to pursue teaching so I can make a difference in how math is taught and how students perceive math. Before this math teacher, my math classes were boring, and everyone in my class hated the subject. Math doesn’t need to be this way. Math should be challenging but fun and relatable. Learning can be so fun with the proper execution. I want to become a teacher so that I can give math a makeover. I want to change those five negative outlooks that students have. I want to help students understand the importance of mastering these concepts while enjoying learning about them.
